Bought me a GMRS radio

A lot of my buddies have powerful setups. I did not want to spend a bunch of $$ so I got a Baofeng UV-5R on amazon for well under $30. I got a 20" whip antenna at the recommendation of my pal.

So I had a buddy help me program it. Last night I listened to some local repeaters and heard folk in Florida and New Jersey!

Not bad for a cheapo little radio.

Neat gadget to have. It is 5w so I am supposed to have a license to broadcast. We will see
I am going to have fun playing with it.

This does need to resurface, since the Gov banned the sale of some of these little hand held units.

I bought this before the ban....

Just going to mention this in case...UHF is what military aircraft carry and VHF is what civil aircraft carry. If you broadcast on those channels be very sure you are not using ATC frequencies. You don't even need to broadcasting on an aviation channel in order to bleed over into ATC communications. If you do, your going to eventually find a van parked outside your house followed by some very pissed off FTC goons. Or worse if you've blocked or interfered with ATC transmissions and caused an incident. Can they find you? Absolutely. 5 watts is plenty enough power to cause interference. I've seen it happen in the past. Thats part of the reason why they want you to register. No judgement on my part, doesn't happen too often.
do as you please, just thought you should know. Have you looked out your window and seen any vans recently? Lol.

I would not worry about interfering with military frequencies. Everything that is passed of importance is secure via timing (frequency hop) or encryption (cyphertext). You can put a radio 100 yards away on the same frequency that is amplified to 50 kW and it will have no bearing on a radio transmission that is secure. I am not sure what civilian air craft are using for VHF timing or encryption, but I know our military VHF radios will not pick up civilian air craft and our transmissions do not bleed over. The military uses VHF frequencies 32.750 to 88.750.

This is true from my perspective. Never experienced ground based interference from transmitting on UHF. Mainly VHF. Lot of bleedover issues there. If you're very close to an ATC based radio site and putting out enough power, it can bleedover. I can only talk from my end of it. I only know aviation based radio's, not what they sell commercially to other consumers. Nothing worse to a controller than radio interference and stuck mics. Radios are our lifeblood. No radio, no control. No control = potential disaster. And I've seen a lot of near disasters over the years.

Why would the aviation community use VHF frequencies that are available to the public? That sounds like a recipe for disaster. Personally since I am not talking to aircraft and prefer distance and reliability I would rather talk HF anyways. Plus I can send data over HF, pictures and text.

I don't know what they sell to the general public for normal use, but anyone can buy a handheld radio that has aviation freqs on it. Aviation freqs have anywhere from 5 to 50 waats power depending on the site. This stuff is not an exact science. Radio waves can do some weird shit. Atmosphere, ground based obstacles come in to play. Radio waves can also do shit like reflect and bounce off the ground and cancel themselves out. Even power lines can f... shit up. It's a real pisser trying to figure the shit out sometimes. Drives the FAA Techs crazy. I totally agree with you on the HF.
