Winter Crappies
what's your favorite winter setup???? Up here it's gotta be through the ice....
My favorite is a wax worm on a pink jig head with cropped feathers....

Such a long time for me, but I liked blade baits in mid afternoon.

I do not have a favorite. It seems they are hitting something different every time I go out, so I just ensure I prepared for everything. The only bait that has never failed me is minnows.

I have not been in a while but we catch them best on real small ity bit soft body on a 1/16 oz head on 4# line deadsticked at the depth we find em with sonar. Normally 15-18 feet suspended in 30-35 with standing timber.
Or minnows if they are small enough. they work great. My buddy uses rosie reds from the pet store but they die if it is real cold but they have a smaller body and are orange. they work great if the water if 40-50 degrees This stuff for cold. if the water is warm for several days of nice weather and we find 50+ degree water regular ole minnows are best for us. otherwise it is small baits and not moved much.

My favorite set-up in you catch, clean & cook...I eat!
I haven't ice fished in years, but come spring during spawn...love a huge mess of crappie.

That works if you need to get the minnow down a ways. I actually prefer the other way. Dropshot and set the hook to where the fish are suspended. Works great when the fish are not active.
When fishing in the summer and the fish are in 12 feet of water or less I prefer to let the minnow swim free.
