Extremely painful shin splints

I have been getting shin splint like cramps for a few years, usually they just go away as I push threw my cardio.

While I was in Chicago on vacation, i had them so bad that I almost couldn't walk. I had to sit and rest every so often. When I got the the hotel, my legs were shaking and felt weak for the next few days.

I assumed it was my choice of shoes that caused it but I am still getting them. Now I get the cramping / pumped feeling in the shins which leads to my calves cramping and knees hurting.

Anyone have any insight? Maybe its more than shin splints?

I have the same problem. Compression sleeves help me get through my cardio/jogging. Still, they start throbbing as soon as I really get after it.

Sounds like you have more than micro-tears going on. You may have torn the muscle straight off the bone. This happened to one of my buddies. He thought it was just shin splints, but the pain never really went away. He had to have surgery. Good news is the surgery completely corrected the problem. Could also be compartment syndrome.

hmmm, I know crazy, but you are use to xyz weather, and you were in the cold

does sound serious though, if it doesn't go away, i'd get it checked

the pain is to damned high

I developed shin splints years ago when I started running, I had some shoes I thought were decent but weren't. I gave it a lot of rest and bought some highly rated running kicks and never had them again. They DO suck, big time.

If you have had them for some time there may be more going on, as gf said, micro tears of the muscles, stress fractures of the bone most common.

See a doc to be sure it's not something like the above, maybe there is a kinetic chain issue. Do you have flat feet, that can contribute. Replace gym kicks if they are old, especially if you are on the heavier side, cushioning wears out faster, maybe look into Brooks Beast. Try a new brand of everyday kicks and maybe cushioning inner soles or orthotics.

I used to get shin splints that were very painful. I looked on the google and found stretches to help reduce the shin splints. I also bought a pair of shoes from runners world. they watched me run and even without me telling the lady she said "do you get shin splints?"

I got a pair of orthopedic mizuno running shoes. I still feel a twinge of pain from time to time but I am 99% pain free now even after hard cardio/run

Thanks all. I definitely have flat feet. I'm leaning towards my shoes as the cause but will also go see my ortho to check it out. No doubt that the cold played a factor but its on ongoing issue. I could not imagine not having full use of my legs.

Yep, flat feet here too. If I jog more than a mile, mine would start killing me. So the solution........quit running

I only ever got that when taking dbol or anadrol. Walking around while at college, class to class, I had a hard time making it on time

My experience was exactly as you described.

If that is the case then like TommyD said, Brooks Beast or another motion control shoe should help.
