Fall bass fishing

Well it is back up near 100 degrees but the fish are moving. Guys are catching on mainlake points at mouths of creeks. I am going out Friday to fish my fav area see if I cannot get into a school.

What is your fav fall lure? pattern? rod setup?

Me, I like square bill cranks and lipless. Cover a lot of water and seem to catch good numbers.

Discuss.

Fishing season is pretty much done for me, since deer season started on the 15th. I might go crappie fishing though if we have a week where the temperatures are too high for hunting, like this week.

Anyways, my favorite will always be a frog with a trailer hook. Colors vary. I have never found a discernable pattern based off water clarity, cloud cover, water temperature, etc... Somedays they hit something that is more naturally colored and somedays they hit bright colors. I will almost exclusively throw frogs March - November for the first few hours I am fishing then I change to a soft plastic, weighted or non-weighted depending on vegetation and fishing pressure. I have a few hard plastics and spinners, but they do not get much use. December - February I only fish soft plastics, slow and suspended.

Fall bass up here are fickle.... sometimes you can coax them with a shad or shinner lip hooked with a split shot 12 inches above. Let it sink, the bait works itself off the bottom, then the bite is tricky, almost like they suck it in and just hang there a second trying to decide if its yummy or not...

GF, I am most confident with soft plastics but have found covering water is more important with moving lures to find them. Then I can slow down and fish a TX rig worm.

A1, live bait bass fishing is not frowned upon here but is definitely not respected.

No, it is the tourney mindset. Kinda like fly fishing. Yeah if you used live bait or salmon eggs or what ever you would catch more BUT it is not as sporting and does not require the skill.

The skill factor is why bass fishing with artificial is so popular. the state record bass for Texas was caught by a crappie fisherman using minnows if the lore is correct.

Again, not against it, just love the challenge of taking a piece of plastic and tricking a fish into biting.

I use soft plastic swim baits for that.

Water temps have been ridiculous here (FL), just today, finally got a forecast with lows dipping to 60's for a straight week. That = Pompano season, will be heading out this weekend for sure.
