Krill Or Kelp

Introduction

When you are looking around for your Omega-3, you may be forced to choose between kelp or krill supplements. When you are faced with that decision, you need to look at the advantages of one over the other in providing Omega-3.

The Importance Of Omega-3

Omega-3 has been found to be important to your health. It is good for your heart, brain, eyesight, cholesterol and has many other health benefits also. It is so healthful that the US government is recommending that you eat up to 8.5 ounces of fish a week to get the proper amount of Omega-3.

What Is Kelp

Kelp is large brown seaweed that is found off the coast in the shallows of the oceans. It grows so densely that its locations are referred to as forests of kelp.

Kelp supplements can provide the Omega-3 the body needs in the form of the essential fatty acid ALA ( alpha-linolenic acid).

What Is Krill

Krill are small shrimp like animals used as a food source for various marine animals such as salmon and whales. Krill can also provide Omega-3 in the form of the EFAs DHA ( docosahexaenoic acid ) and EPA ( eicosapentaenoic acid ).

Which Is Best Kelp Or Krill

Since both kelp and krill can provide Omega-3, one in the form of ALA and the other in the form of DHA and EPA, which one is better for you?

Based on what I have studied, krill supplements will provide you with the Omega-3 you need much better than kelp. The reason is Omega-3 taken in the form of ALA (kelp), needs to be broken down to the EFAs DHA and EPA before it is of any benefit. And the body can only effectively break down 15% of the ALA, the rest is lost.

So to get the maximum benefit of Omega-3, it is better to take krill supplements.

When Should Kelp Supplements Be Used

Kelp supplements should not be totally thrown out. If you are a vegetarian, kelp supplements are a great choice to get your Omega-3. But to receive the same amount of Omega-3 as a non-vegetarian does, you may have to take more supplements.

But kelp provides more vitamins than krill supplements in the form of iodine, iron, potassium, phosphorus, salt and calcium.

Conclusion

Both kelp and krill supplements provide Omega-3, but the Omega-3 provided by krill is better utilized by the body; however, kelp can provide more benefits than krill by giving more minerals that the body needs

My question is how do you know that one is more useable by the body than the other?

Kelp Omega 3's are ALA...similar to flax seeds.
Krill is DHA and EPA

IMO Krill doesn't have enough Omega 3's in it to make as substantial of a difference as a high potency fish oil.

Anyone can check for themselves to see what works best for them. Get an Omega 3 index blood test. If your at the level you need to be your good...keep doing what your doing. If your low figure out what gets you to where you need to be.

but fish oil even though it is higher in volume is still less effective at providing EPA and DHA.

"The phospholipid structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more absorbable. Krill oil also contains vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D, and canthaxanthin, which is a potent antioxidant.

The antioxidant potency of krill oil is, in terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorptance Capacity) values, 48 times more potent than fish oil."

i still use fish oil just because it is 1/4 the price. just more of it.
