Cold steel summer sale ***Today only*** 07/31/18

Cold steel has some great knives. Many are not fancy but are quality steel and well made.

Here is a really tough folder.

I’ve got a Recon with a Tanto blade. It’s a great knife & has the sharpest blade I’ve ever had.

First if it says made in taiwan or china it may be OK but probably is not great.

look at the steel the blade is made of. if it says stainless and that is all you have no idea what it is. Some stainless performs better than others. I have an ontario rat folder which I believe is made in china but to their specs. It is only $30 and is AUS-8 steel which is very hard and stays sharp but harder to sharpen and prone to chips (hard holds an edge but is more brittle). My fav steel is S30V right now. very hard but chip resistant, corrosion resistant, strong but takes a lot of patience to sharpen although I have never needed to other than stropping with compound.

Blade hardness is a trade off. many guys like high carbon blades as they tend to be the best for hard use but they rust. so great for a fixed blade you can keep oiled in a sheath not great for a folder you may use then put in your sweaty pocket. Although I have a couple high carbon folders and a light coat of gun oil keeps them fine.

Also handle/scale material. lots of great natty materials out there but I have found I like G10 for folders and micarta for fixed blades.

cheapos will have plastic or zytel scales.

Then we get to bearings for folders. A good folder will have quality bearings and sometimes phosphor bronze bushing. a cheapo will have plastic or steel if it has any at all. this makes for smooth deployment.

the rat folder is one of my fav knives as a folder. It is heavy but it is well made and sharp as hell. Byrd cara is a light weight knife made by spyderco and is a good knock around knife that will last.

For a cheap fixed blade you cannot go wrong with a mora companion. High carbon blade is sharp and holds an edge. tough as a honey badger and you can get em under $15 on amazon. cheap handle and sheath but for the $$$ you will not find a better knife. A lot of bushcraft guys use the old mora #1 which is about $15 but less durable than the companion.

Esee makes REALLY good knives if you want a higher quality mass produced high carbon fixed blade that will last you past the end of the world.

The material used to make the blades is one of the biggest factors to look at.

arguably more important than handle material. Most moras have plastic or rubber handles but the blades are excellent. But having all premium parts is a plus as well.
