Anyone have a shoulder replacement?

Seems one is in my near future. For the last year and some my left shoulder has been totally annoyed, more after some sort of activity, like weight training. Went to an Ortho, he took xrays and said I had a calcium build up and he thought a piece may have broken free and floated around. Fast forward 3 cortisone shots he tells me if I need surgery I would have to find another doc, he doesn't do surgery anymore.

I found a highly rated Ortho who specializes in shoulders, well published and works with athletes. My initial visit he notices my left shoulder is forward of the right and sends my for xrays. He comes in and shows me the pics, my shoulder is out of place and shows me where the surgeon who did my labrum also did some decompression work so that impingement there isn't the problem and wants an MRI, he thinks my rotator cuff has been damaged.

I got my MRI this morning and waiting on the follow up visit to see if it will be a total replacement or just the head of the humerus. He showed me the rough surface on the bumeral head and said arthritis is well established. I want to ask if it really has to be replaced or if it can be scraped like they did on my right one about 20 years ago. He says I'll be back in relatively short time, it's a pretty basic operation. I'm still apprenhensive

No clue brother. Gotgame may have some answers but I figured he would need to see the x-rays. Sorry to hear of this. I think most of us have shoulder problems. Keep us posted. Wish you luck!!!

I had the arthritis cut out two months ago. Surgery was easy and recovery is fast, but I did not have any tears. I am sure with tears it would have been more complicated.

Damn, that does NOT sound like fun. Hope it goes well for you. When all is said and done is the surgery good enough to restore range of motion and strength?

The doc says I should get most rom back, I guess it all depends on the damage and repair.. Anything is better thsn what I have now, can't really reach up past horizontal without pain, get dressed or undressed especially reaching back to put my arm through a sleeve, reach up the stairs to open a door. Sometimes even moving the steering wheel while my arm is at my side hurts. The real funky part is feeling the humerus clunking around my 'socket' as I do things, sometimes there is an audible 'clunk' as it moves around, freaked my wife out once.

Sounds horrible man, I hope it all works out well for you. Nagging injuries that only get worse are terrible.

Hey Tommy...I'm scheduled to have a complete reverse shoulder replacement in June. My rotator cuff is completely torn and there is significant joint osteoarthritis. The pain at night is ridiculous. Also, to add insult to injury, I just found out Monday from my PCP I also need surgery on my left shoulder, but not sure how extensive that will be until I meet with the surgeon. I'm thinking my lifting days will be coming to a screeching halt soon......Good luck with yours brother...

Had a friend get a reverse shoulder replacement bout 6 months ago. He was swimming in my pool in a month and is now achieved 90% mobility with that arm and zero pain. I was amazed with pt and recovery. Had several other people with rotator repairs or labrum replacement not so happy.
