Squatting and Foot Placement

Is your squat stance optimal for power and longevity? While a lot of powerlifters prefer a wide, sumo style squat to generate power they may be at a significantly higher risk of knee injury due to lateral movement of the knee. Here is a study on the width and angle of the feet during the squat.

Note - They qualified experienced lifters as someone who could squat 80% of their bodyweight. I usually do not laugh at others in the gym, but you should not qualify yourself as an experienced lifter if you are only squatting 80% of your bodyweight and if you do I will laugh at you.

Yeah I try to to laugh at myself when I squat as it is pretty light. But I go light because of my jacked up back and knees. I think I squat with my knees in a good position.

Good article. thanks.

I've seen tons of squat techniques on foot placement, and to be honest, I just use a stance I feel good and comfortable with. If I change it up and it feels weird, or better yet, stress and hurting, I quit that stance. My stance it shoulder width or a tad wider. I have never got use to powerlifter wide stance squats....though they don't hurt me, so it's probably something I could switch in every now and then to mix things up.

Thanks for the link.

I like a little wider than shoulder width, and toes pointed out some... but not a real wide stance.

80% of your body weight? That must be for a untrained lifter???

Untrained is the category I would fall into now days :/
