The latest a .280

I haven't add to my collection in a while. The wife wanted a home defense type handgun and something that she could enjoy shooting with her Dad so I picked up a .38 special revolver for her. Soooo, I thought I SHOULD have a new gun too! I found a great price on a Ruger .280 and I am topping it with a 3x12 Leupold, my favorite glass. Looking forward to it. I haven't shot one in over a decade.

I’ve never shot one but have read up on them a little in the past. Sounds light a revved up 270 from what I got out of it.

Like the .270 Winchester, the .280 Remington is based on the 30-06 cartridge. The brass is necked down to a 7mm bullet (.280 inches) and the powder capacity is the same. Your .270 is going to achieve higher muzzle velocities with projectiles in the 130 grain range, but the 7mm bullet weights go up to 175 grains. The ballistic coefficient of that long 175 grain round is great too. Many people experience deeper penetration with 7mm than with a 30 caliber projectile, but your mileage may vary.

If I was going to step into the 7mm arena I would either go with the 7mm-08 or the 7mm Remington magnum. The .280 does everything that my 30-06 already does.

I have never shot one, so I cannot compare them to anything. However, most calibers from .264 to .308 are similar in their capabilities. Most humans cannot shoot to the capability of the round or weapon, so the differences are often negligible. You would think understanding that would keep me from buying more weapons in those calibers, but it is almost like an addiction. I love rifles.

I am not current in rifle rounds. I did a cursory check and ballistics look really good!

The .280 has a little more energy and a little more velocity at distance. My favorite rifle of all time is the 6.5 Creedmoor but I had to have something I don't already have. I have three 06s already. The 700 the 742 and the 7600.

If you have a modern bolt rifle that can handle the pressure, you can load that .280 so that its spitting 140g to 150g pills down range at over 3000fps.

When the cartridge was designed, a lot of guys were rabarreling old shot out '06 rifles and Remington kept that in mind. They kept the pressure pretty pedestrian and resulting muzzle velocities were mediocre.

In something like a brand new 700 I would venture to say you could get your load up to 52cup safely. You might have a hard time finding the right powder to fit enough of in the case, but it would be a fun project. Lol.
