Medical and Physical Therapy questions A place to talk about current and or past injuries and possibly how to deal with those injuries. Any advice should not be considered as medical advice, but rather from one person to another as you might ask a friend.

Shoulder injury, maybe torn RC?

Hey all, my shoulders have been sore for a while, then about 2 weeks ago, 12 days to be exact I went to a gym that doesn't have a traditional bench or incline, with barbell, instead they have actual flat and incline hammerstrength machines. These start way down below where I would normally go, I should have never got on them, but I did.

Anyway went for a set felt it as soon as I started to press up... arm was shot for the rest of the workout, had to quit early.

Since then the pain has been daily, lots of ibuprophen and alieve and ice pack.

I've managed to work legs a couple times but even strained it one day doing leg presses with my hand on my chest, no clue how that happened.

I don't have insurance and can't afford the Doc visit right now. I'm trying to just rest it and ice it. Is there anyway to get a better idea what the damage is without an MRI? never any bruising, or real swelling, although a trainer friend of mine said it was very knotted. Frustrated at the moment, ugh!

Hard to really know what it is, it could be a lot of issues.

I tore the labrum ayear apart in in each shoulder, I was still able to train upper body but at 2/3 my normal training weights and a lot of naproxen. Reaching in back of of me, like putting on a coat hurt like a bastard.

Good luck.

I thought we were all covered under O'bamacare??

If it hurts worse at night when you're trying sleep, you tore something...

Tore my shoulder out last year. Everyones suggestions above are solid.

Can u put your hand behind your back and reach up for your shoulder blade? How does it compare to the non-injured side?

Lay flat on bench and perform a rotator stretch. Can you complete r.o.m. without discomfort?

If its a torn labrem, only way to fix is surgery. For very minor rotator tears, rest and some very aggresive p.t. can spark blood flow to that area. My P.T. did very intense rotator massage and gua sha techniques. The massage and gua sha for an hour was 75 bucks. Did it for 2 months, once a week. Highly recommend it!!

I just had an MRI on my shoulder as I was experiencing the same issues your are currently. My doctor informed me I had three tears in the rotor cuff. He is pressing me for surgery, but I'm not ready for that. He gave me an injection which worked for the first few weeks, but as of now I'm back to taking ibuprofen and naproxen daily. I have a physical therapist friend who has given me exercises to strengthen the shoulder but I'm not having any success. Like stated before if you have issues while sleeping you have most likely tore something. That's what made me go have it checked. Good luck on your recovery.
