Making your own knives!

i think we need a dedicated thread for this as there are at least a few of us that are interested in it.

so far i have harbor freight anvil, leather apron, set of hammers, grinder, bench belt grinder from sears, need to make some tongs i guess since they are not a common tool to find, lots of raw materials. i was gonna use a bbq for a forge but now that the brake drum forge has been suggested that is what im gonna build. got a local metal scrap yard where i will look for a semi truck drum if not a large regular truck drum then. non galvanized pipe fittings and a hair dryer mounted on brickss and i am going.

first will be a material removal saw blade knife. then heated up and tempered. will use used motor oil for quench. i will do this in the next month i hope.

thoughts? links to info? comments? bring it on

here is an instructable for building a simple brake drum forge

That is pretty cool. If you have an old scrap yard look for leaf springs. They are great for knives.

ok the plan is in place.

it will be stock(material) removal construction.
circular concrete saw material, cut with angle grinder and cut wheel to rough shape
over all length will be 9 1/2 inches including tang/handle.
full tang construction.
hardwood handle scales
brass pins 1/8 inch diameter. two pins peened and epoxy. hand applied linseed oil finish.
grinding with home grinder and 24 inch bench belt grinder (bought for 20 at garage sale) and hand filing(major hand filing only if annealing is required to work metal).
will attempt to maintain hardness of metal for no heat treatment, if not then will attempt the firebrick butane micro forge heat treatment

Tempering to 400 degrees for 1 to 2 hours to over night air cool at least twice no more than 4 times. will test scrap metal from cutting for proper heat treat and temper.

design will be similar to these two knives. elements of both, some elements neither have.

questions? Advice?

Looks great. I think you will enjoy it. The sharpest knife I own is one I made from material removal.

Hey finally something I like to do. I was just at the US' largest hammer in and knife maker show this past fall. I can tell you it isnt hard to make fixed blades. Get to learning leather too, making sheaths is where its at! Im saving up for a decent anvil right now, i got a big ass chunk of steel from a welding shop right no.

i have a buddy who uses a piece of rail road track. not like a big anvil but even a small 70 pounder is wicked expensive.

I have seen tutorials on how to make railroad track more like an anvil. i have a harbor freight anvil that gets badmouthed a lot. 50lbs i think, maybey 70

ok lot of smiths are saying no circular saw blades will make good knives. i have a crap load of files i have bought at garage sales but we are talking forging again and not stock removal. i am going to see a girl in the country this weekend so i might look for some found metal that will fit the bill while im up there. i found a bucket of railroad spikes up there for free so you never know.

i can buy anealed flat stock of known blade steel for not too much, will have to be heat treated but a known quantity, or i can check at the salvage yard to see what can be found.

what do you guys think?
