Bacopa Extract - What Are the Health Benefits?
Bacopa extract has been the subject of much discussion with many people wanting to know if it does really have any health benefits. Bacopa is a type of water dwelling plant who is often mistaken for water lilies. It has been used in traditional medicine for several thousand years; the extract has long been used as a restorative for the brain and central nervous system.
The one thing it has in common with other natural plants is its extremely powerful antioxidant capabilities. It is this quality that much of today's research is concentrated on. Antioxidants help to counteract and eliminate free radicals; these are responsible for cell damage, which ultimately leads to many of today's illnesses and health conditions.
Enhanced cognitive function.
Bacopa can increase nerve impulse transmission. It does this by repairing damaged neurons by boosting kinase activity and restoring synaptic function.
One of the major characteristics of Alzheimer's has to do with neuron activity in the hippocampus. Recent studies indicate that Bacopa has strong antioxidant action in the hippocampus as well as the frontal cortex and the striatum.
Cognitive enhancing effects.
Research was conducted over a period of three months with 46 volunteers who were given a daily dose of Bacopa extract. At the end of the study when the results were analyzed it was found that verbal learning, memory and speed of information processing all had a substantial enhancement. The results were attributed to Bacopa's antioxidant properties.
Similar studies have been carried out with children. In the first study improvements were noticed in the organization and reasoning ability and better perceptual image of shapes.
Some very interesting results were achieved when children who had been diagnosed with ADHD were carried out over a four-month period. A substantial difference was noticed in sentence repetition and logical memory.
In today's world this is quite a common ailment, at the end of a study conducted over a period of one month the following results were observed. The anxiety levels in the patients had a substantial reduction along with their mental fatigue. Their perspiration rate had decreased along with their systolic blood-pressure. There are no side effects with this extract unlike the commonly prescribed drugs for this condition.
Bronchitis and Asthma.
For conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, hoarseness, and allergy symptoms the extract as shown to have a relaxing effect on the affected areas such as trachea, pulmonary artery, and aorta.
In common with many other plant extracts it has anti-inflammatory functions.
As you can see the health benefits of Bacopa extract are quite considerable. What has long been known to traditional medicine has been verified by animal studies and clinical trials.
Does it have any side effects? The only side effect that has been discovered is a condition of sleepiness if you consume too much. However, it is not a stand-alone nutritional supplement; it is best taken as part of a multivitamin supplement. This extract works in synergy with other extracts to give you the maximum amount of health benefits.
